The Russian Marines are still active in the Latakia Governorate, despite the massive withdrawal of military personnel and air assets in late February of this year.
While Russian Marines are specifically used to advise government forces in their fight against terrorist groups, the recent air activity at the Humaymim Airbase has created the need for stronger security around the Latakia Governorate.
Humaymim Airbase is heavily fortified; however, the city of Jableh has been targeted by terrorist groups in the past because of the large pro-government population.
As a result, the Russian military has increased their security effort and installed several checkpoints around the Bassel Al-Assad International Airport.
Elsewhere, Russian soldiers can still be seen with the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and civilian paramilitary units, directing them in battle and calling airstrikes.
One of the benefits of the Russian Army’s heterogeneous ethnic composition is the large number of Arabic speaking military personnel.
Several Russian advisers from the Caucasus Mountains can speak Arabic and communicate directly with the Syrian military personnel; this is one of the reasons a large number of Russian soldiers work in small groups with the Syrian Army.
One specific National Defense Forces (NDF) unit in northern Latakia took several photos with their designated military adviser (pictured below).
