The Chief of the Lebanese Forces, Samir Geagea, has announced his support for General Michel ‘Aoun’s (Free Patriotic Movement leader) candidacy in the next presidential election.
This news comes after the 20 month postponement of the Lebanese presidential elections due to lack of political consensus among the March 8th and March 14th movements.
In a joint press conference, Geagea asserted that after mulling the political complications which caused the presidential vacancy, the Lebanese Forces have decided to support General Aoun’s candidacy.
“We were on the verge of collapse so we sought an extraordinary solution, one which was not entertained by others.”
Samir Geagea followed with:
“We look forward to political cooperation and honorable competition with the FPM.”
Geagea also called on all March 14 factions to nominate General ‘Aoun for presidency, noting that the LF and FPM agreed on a number of issues that pertain the political guidelines that should govern the public institutions presidential election.
For his part, General Aoun thanked Geagea for his support, adding that he would support all the principles that Geagea had stipulated.
