Iraqi forces have just broken through ISIS defenses and have entered the city center.
It has been reported that ISIS have prevented civilians from leaving the city, bringing concern that many civilians will be caught in the middle of cross fire, but scores of ISIS have been killed.
There have been no confirmed reports of IED (Improvised Explosive Device) attacks as originally feared. But this remains to be seen as events unfold.
Brett McGurk, Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL, confirmed US-led coalition airstrikes against ISIS in Ramadi.
“Our air coalition at this hour supporting Iraqi security forces as they push into remaining ISIL strongholds of Ramadi,” he said.
A Vice News dispatch to Iraq recorded an Iraqi fighter thanking Russia’s effective air campaign in Syria against ISIS as it made US-led coalition begin coordination with the anti-ISIS forces and effectively targeting ISIS which was not occurring before Russian intervention.
Unconfirmed reports have also said US special forces have participated in the retaking of Ramadi via attack helicopters.
Iraqi forces have reportedly clear al-Dhubat area in southern Ramadi.
