Just a few days after the US sanctimoniously advised Turkey to respect Iraq’s sovereignty, they continue to flagrantly violate the sovereignty of Syria.
In an interview with RIA Novosti (as cited by RT), Syria’s deputy foreign minister, Faisal al-Mikdad expressed his views on the US presence in Syria.
“We doubt that they are sincere in their fight against terrorism. They do not coordinate their actions with the Syrian Army. This makes those forces illegal in Syria’s territory. One cannot say they are fighting terrorism” he told interviewers.
Al-Mikdad’s comments were made after the US defence secretary, Ashton Carter announced the deployment of special forces into Syria.
Speaking at a meeting with US troops; commanders; and Kurdish leaders at Irbil (Iraqi Kurdistan), Carter said that US commandos went into Syria to “identify and link up with local forces, especially Syrian Arab forces that were willing to fight ISIL but needed our help”.
But even before this call for US forces inside Syria, the US led coalition had already been breaching international law with the recent French and British air-strikes on Syrian territory.
In October, the Syrian foreign minister, Walid Muallem commented on the unlawful airstrikes.
“What Britain and France are doing in Syrian airspace flies in the face of international law and is a flagrant violation of the national sovereignty of the Syrian Republic”, Sputnik reported him saying.
In the meantime, Russia continues to cooperate with the Syrian government on Syrian territory within international law, with notable achievements.
“Russian airstrikes have degraded the terrorists, as proven by the recapturing of territories in Hama, Latakia, Idlib and Aleppo provinces. Those are significant successes and they will become apparent even more soon” al-Mikdad said.
