BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:10 P.M.) – Over 1,000 fighters of the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been killed during engagements inside Raqqa city over the last two months according to an info-graphic released by ISIS propaganda.

According to the ISIS info-graphic (shown below), jihadist militants fighting inside Raqqa have inflicted losses of the SDF to the effect of:

  • 1,040 fighters killed (207 by sniper fire); and
  • 24 vehicles destroyed (6 damaged) including two Humvees, one bulldozer, three Toyota pickups, three BMPs, fourteen “other types” of vehicles and a drone.

Furthermore, ISIS claims that its forces carried out a total of 54 attacks on the SDF of which four were Inghimasis (shock troop) assaults, thiry-six were suicide missions and fourteen were “normal” engagements.

Realistically speaking, it is hard to believe that SDF manpower losses are actually as high as ISIS claims they are; more likely it is the case that SDF Raqqa battle-related deaths are around half to one-third of the number suggested in the jihadist info-graphic.

Your headline is misleading ( I suppose most headlines are). The figure quoted is for SDF casualties, not necessarily all Kurdish. More importantly, the figure is from their enemy, and totally unverified.

Your headline should read ‘ISIS claim > 1,000 SDF Raqqa casualties’ or similar
